LAS VEGAS, Nev. - It was a clean sweep for the RACEceiver Legends INEX national asphalt point champions at the 16th Annual RACEceiver Legends and Thunder Roadsters Asphalt Nationals. All three point champions collected the winner's trophy in the most prestigious Legends race of the year Saturday night at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Georgia's Casey Roderick has been one of the most dominant Pro Legends drivers in the past year. He collected his second straight Asphalt Nationals winner's trophy to cap off his stellar year. In the past 18 months, Roderick has won two Asphalt Nationals events, the 2006 Summer Shootout at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the PRI Invitational at Orlando and the 2007 INEX National Pro title. Not too bad for a kid of just 15. Roderick passed Doug Stevens on the final lap to claim the victory. Stevens finished second with Chris Buescher, Andrew Smith and Kory Abbott following.
The Masters division was much of the same as years past as the all-time winningest driver in Legends car history, Clay Hair, claimed his fifth straight Asphalt Nationals title. Jeff Haynie was second with Billy Gomez third. Terry Plummer and Tim Brockhouse rounded out the top five.
The Semi-Pro race looked like it was all Zach ZImmerly. Zimmerly was disqualified in the heat race for a tech violation, and had to race his way from back of the C-main. He was clearly the class of the field, clawing his way to victories in the C-main and B-main before passing every car in the feature in the first 22 laps to take the lead. It looked like there was no way Zimmerly would be denied, but contact between Zimmerly and second-place Christian Pahud on the final lap, sent Zimmerly spinning into the wall. Pahud was black-flagged by the officials for the contact, handing the victory to 2007 Semi-Pro point champion, John Stancill. Josh Williams was awarded second with Jeremiah Wagner, Dylan Ames and Jeremy Mullinax following.
The Thunder Roadster race came down to a dual between Charlie Wahl and Michael Van Wingerden. Wahl lead the majority of the race until M. Van WIngerden made his move with four laps to go. The resulting battle brought Paul Peeples, Thomas Van Wingerden and Jesse Bunnell back into the mix. Wahl's roadster got sideways off turn four with a tire going down, allowing M. Van Wingerden to pull away for the victory. Peeples was second with Wahl hanging on for third. T. Van Wingerden and Jesse Bunnell rounded out the top five.
Andrew Porter won the Bandolero Young Guns exhibition while Rachel Brown took home the trophy in the Bandolero Bandits.
